Derek became a director of John Robertson Architects in 1997. His skill at delivering complex building projects has brought about the practice’s industry-leading reputation for delivery and quality assurance.
Derek spent his early career specialising in housing design for Local Authorities, completing a large number of projects to develop a considerable expertise in the principles of urban housing design. He subsequently developed parallel expertise in the commercial sector managing complex new-build and refurbishment projects, including where work needed to be phased to allow retained parts of a building to remain operational during construction projects.
Derek takes responsibility for John Robertson Architects’ office standards and Quality Assurance framework and is a trained CDM coordinator. Derek’s application to maintaining these standards has been crucial to the development of JRA’s reputation for excellence in construction management and the practice has been repeatedly called upon to deliver high-profile buildings such as Native Land/Carillion’s NEO Bankside, St James’ The Corniche and Taylor Woodrow’s Montevetro in Battersea. Under Derek’s direction, JRA monitored the construction and delivery of The Leadenhall Building on behalf of the client, British Land.
