Kings College Strand Campus opens with the new East Courtyard pavilion at its heart. JRA’s comprehensive redevelopment has transformed the historic Aldwych Quarter to create a brand new university campus for KCL.
The fit-out of Bush House and its four adjoining buildings included lecture theatres, seminar rooms, academic offices and a 400 seat auditorium across 30,000m2. The new build pavilion is situated at the heart of the East Courtyard and provides a flagship entrance to the Student’s Union and access to buildings across the site via an undercroft. Formed from two large glazed boxes with anodised aluminium fritting, the bespoke addition complements the heritage of the 1920s site. Inside, the pavilion marries traditional and contemporary styles to echo the treatment across the KCL buildings and is completed by feature lighting art by Blackbody.
The space is now in use, and the works which commenced in 2015 have come to an end, providing a state of the art university campus.
