JRA has been granted planning permission for a new 326 bed hotel in the Smithfield Conservation area for Whitbread Hotels. The scheme will retain the existing 1970s red-brick building at 24-30 West Smithfield and a new eight storey extension to the south fronting Cock Lane.
The designs for both the refurbishment and the new build extension are sensitive to the historic context of Smithfield, reflecting the materials and colour pallet of surrounding buildings. Red and light beige brick differentiate the plot widths and a darker grey brick within recesses separates the plots. Decorative brick patterns and horizontal banding add interest to the façade. The hotel will be built around a central, glass-roofed atrium that links the two blocks and creates an animated focal point from which all other shared and private spaces are accessed.
